With a healthy employment outlook for the next 10 years, it is no wonder that distance learning civil engineering is offered by numerous Universities, Polytechnic Institutes, and Colleges, across the country. Civil Engineering is the oldest form of engineering. And Civil Engineering has never ceased to be the largest engineering endeaver as well. Even to this day, with 237,000 civil engineers on duty, it is America’s largest engineering branch that accounts for 16.4% of all engineering jobs in the country.

What it Involves

Distance learning civil engineering involves taking either a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or a Master of Science (M.S.), in Civil Engineering through the online or distance mode. M.S. in specializations like Structural Engineering, Construction Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, and Hydraulic Engineering, are also available through distance learning civil engineering.

Though 2-year Associate Degrees are also available, it is only as a bridge to a B.S. Degree, since a Bachelor’s is the minimum entry-level requirement for the industry. However, an Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology is acceptable for the career of Civil Engineering Technician.

In the USA, Professional Engineer (PE) license from State Licensing Boards is needed by Civil Engineers if they want to play a role in infrastructure work affecting the public, and the training for the two PE exams, ‘Fundamentals of Engineering’ and ‘Principles and Practice’, are also available through distance learning civil engineering.

Compared with the B.S. degree, there is both more demand as well as options for the M.S. Degree through distance learning civil engineering. The main reason for this is the industry’s increasing demand for specialized civil engineers like Structural or Environmental Engineers. It is also driven by a recent recommendation of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) to the US State Licensing Boards that the minimum educational qualification for Professional Engineer (PE) license be upgraded from the current Bachelor’s to a Masters level.

Why Civil Engineering?

Unlike many engineering branches, the demand for Civil Engineering has a direct relation with population growth. In fact, this is why Civil Engineering continues to be the largest engineering branch in terms of employment, compared with equally conventional branches like Mechanical Engineering or modern branches like Computer Science, which is mainly due to this direct relation with population growth. More people mean more apartments, and more people also eventually lead to a larger employee pool – thereby increasing both residential and commercial construction.

The demand for Civil Engineering also has a direct correlation with economic growth. This is because, periods of economic slowdown will leave no funds for infrastructure development, while periods of economic growth will provide surplus funds that will be gobbled up in no time by the pending infrastructure needs. In the coming years and decades, economic slowdowns will be better predicted, if not avoided, thanks to the better interventional strategies by institutions like the Federal Reserve. This will leave funds ever available for infrastructure development, and will generate steady demand for Civil Engineers in the coming years.

Most Civil Engineering projects like roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, railway lines, airports, seaports, water supplies, sewage systems, buildings, etc. are also heavy on maintenance and repair, and such regular work contributes to the great demand for Civil Engineers. The need for high-speed, highly-safe mass transportation systems like underground or undersea railways is another major driver for the advancement of Civil Engineering.

Civil Engineering of today is also a professionally satisfying career, with good salaries and technologically updated work. Though average salaries of Civil Engineers are not very high, many of them draw as much as US $95,000 and none of them draw below US $43,500. They also get to work in high-tech areas like earthquake-resistant designs, and make heavy use of tools like Computer Aided Design / Engineering (CAD/CAE).

Why Distance Learning Civil Engineering?

Almost all online or distance courses in any branch of engineering would require work in the industry to meet coursework requirements, as coursework in on-campus labs is not possible. Civil Engineering has the greatest advantage on this front as civil work is abundant everywhere, and this is the main reason why so many Universities and Colleges offer distance learning civil engineering.

It is the best option for technicians, surveyors, and other junior technical staff working in the industry, who want to upgrade themselves to the status of an engineer. Indeed, the majority of those going for a B.S. degree through distance learning civil engineering, are already working in the industry. Practicing Civil Engineers already having a Bachelor’s Degree, also find this the best option, as there is professional pressure on them to specialize further in the field, without upsetting their regular work.

When a Civil Engineer grows from an employee to a Consultant, the Professional Engineer (PE) license will become increasingly important. It is widely expected that soon an M.S. in Civil Engineering would become the minimum educational qualification needed for this, and distance learning civil engineering is the best option for this.

Online Civil Engineering Schools provide courses of study in academics for acquiring associate, bachelor, and master degrees. Civil Engineering School programs focus strongly on sciences, and engineers use acquired scientific knowledge to solve practical and technological problems in the process of design and development. Civil engineering can involve some or all factors of design, construction, research, and education.

Civil Engineering Schools are responsible for teaching civil engineering students the responsibilities they must take on for the design and supervision of construction of buildings, roads, buildings, tunnels, dams, bridges, and water supply and sewage systems. In the processes of designing and executing a project, the civil engineer must take into consideration state and federal government regulations and potential environmental hazards that a particular construction may encounter, such as stresses of earthquakes, flooding, or strong winds.

Online Civil Engineering Schools are designed for working adults, and degrees can be completed in less than two years. The Associate Degree of Science in Civil Engineering can be attained without previous experience in engineering. All that is required is a high school diploma or GED. Students in Online Civil Engineering School programs will be expected to master the subjects needed for entry-level positions in civil engineering fields. Courses will include math, physics, chemistry, surveying, structural design, highway design and construction, and much more. Books, lessons, learning aids and equipment for hands-on experience will be included in Online Civil Engineering School studies.

Programs for Master Degrees in Civil Engineering Schools provide students with the technical skills needed for advanced engineering design and management. Master degrees are offered in specialized areas of civil engineering that include structural engineering, transportation, geotechnical, and environmental resources engineering. Some online master degrees in civil engineering may require a short period of residency study.

Civil Engineer Schools train for taking on supervisory roles at construction sites, and for assumption of administrative positions as city engineers. Civil Engineering Schools also train for responsibilities of maintaining quality, estimating time and cost, and completion of projects.

Being and becoming an engineer is no easy feat. The fact is even achieving a bachelor degree in the field requires high quantitative reasoning skills in math and physics. However, once a man or woman achieves these skills it is impossible to look back – they will help someone inside and outside the work arena. A civil engineering degree online is possible in today’s world of online education. Civil engineers are the creators and sustainers of the infrastructure of cities and towns. No matter if it is a public building, water supply, sewer system or roads, a civil engineer has his or her hand in the process.

Once, a newly graduated undergrad enters into the field of civil engineering it becomes obvious further education will be needed. One will be able to start working n the field, but we all want to progress and evolve with our skills and talents. As mentioned above, being a civil engineer takes a lot of time and energy – So, what is a practically answer to the situation? Earning you civil engineering degree online is the perfect solution. An engineer’s life is full enough with work alone, but when you include a family and friends it is almost impossible to go back to college.

If you are thinking about pursuing an engineering degree online there are a couple of things to look out for. Since, you will be doing all the work to advance your career, make sure the program is accredited. You will be surprised how many online programs are and aren’t. To make this easier, traditional colleges are now offering a engineering degree online. The demand is there and the people pursuing them are educated creative people. There are other characteristics a person will need to succeed in attaining an engineering degree online.

The first and foremost is disciple. If you are not a self-starter and motivator, this line of education might not be for you. Though the technology out there is overwhelming and the instructors are very successful engineers, the only one that can get through these programs is you. You must stay focused – it is graduate school after all. A second characteristic a person must have while pursuing an engineering degree online is longevity. Chances are you will be swamped at work; it is the nature of your profession. So, no matter if you are stuck doing blue-prints or you are traveling to look at prospective cities and towns to restructure, this degree might take some time to attain.

There are also specializations within the civil engineering degree online offers to students. You can focus in on construction engineering, structural engineering or others. Before entering into a program it will be helpful that you know the arena you want to become a master in. Of course always check out the requirements for admission. Chancing are you will have them secured, but there is always a chance you will have to take and extra class or two. Besides, these few words on the subject pursuing an engineering degree online can be a great choice and achievement.

Getting your online degree in construction management may be much easier than you think. If you are ready to enhance your career opportunities and are interested in construction management jobs, an online degree in construction management can be achieved on a very flexible schedule that works for you and your time commitments. You can take classes at night and on the weekends and complete tests online when it works for you – all in the comfort of your own home. You can even specialize your online degree in construction management by selecting construction management courses focused on topics like financial management, site planning, contract administration, cost estimating and engineering or architectural sciences.

Construction project management has become an increasingly popular career choice for those graduating from college today. This is partly because the industry has started to recognize how invaluable solid project management for construction sites is – especially considering the growing complexity of major construction projects and the many laws that must be taken into account. The people who are hired into construction management jobs are ultimately responsible for the entire project’s success or failure, which is why the not only requires a specialized degree, but also exceptional interpersonal communication and management skills.

Although these types of jobs can be complicated, they also have a fairly high level of compensation. A traditional or online degree in construction management can help qualify you for positions that pay as much as $63,000 per year, which was the industry average for those jobs in 2002. When you couple that with on-the-job construction management training, your earnings potential can increase dramatically as you move up the company ladder into higher-level positions. To help fast track your career, you could also search out a part-time apprenticeship or internship while you are still working toward your online degree in construction management.

If you are ready to start your search for the best undergraduate program offering an online degree in construction management, you can start by researching what online universities offer variations of the degree. One important piece of criteria is that the school you choose for your online degree in construction management must be an accredited online university. This essentially means the school has been evaluated by an independent committee to determine that the curriculum, staff, facilities and technology are up to current university standards. It also means that you should be able to easily transfer your credits to another university (if need be) and that all companies requiring a traditional or online degree in construction management for new hires will recognize your degree.

With a healthy employment outlook for the next 10 years, it is no wonder that distance learning civil engineering
is offered by numerous Universities, Polytechnic Institutes, and Colleges, across the country.

What to Expect From Distance Learning Civil Engineering, in the Future?

As of today, the number of M.S. Degrees in General Civil Engineering is much more than M.S. in the Civil Engineering specializations like Structural, Construction, Environmental, Geotechnical, Transportation, or Hydraulic. However, this scenario will rapidly change, reflecting the increased demand for specialized Civil Engineers. The result will be that Distance Learning Civil Engineering will be offered by more institutions, and that it will be offered with more majors and specializations.
