Desperate times call for desperate measures, and the Chancellor’s Pre-Budget Report (PBR) delivered recently could herald a new era of co-operation between the Government and the construction industry. The PBR announced that £3billion worth of investment that was due to be carried out in 2010-11 is to be brought forward – news that has been welcomed by the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA). Some of that investment will go towards road projects, flood defence schemes and the necessary infrastructure for new social housing projects also announced in the PBR.

In addition to this injection of capital into construction projects, Chancellor Alistair Darling also announced a raft of initiatives designed to take the pressure off small and medium sized companies, including temporary rate relief on some properties and the relaxation of tax payment periods for struggling companies. The aim of the PBR was to stabilize a shaky economy and get businesses moving again, particularly in the battered and bruised construction industry.

The announcement was roundly welcomed by the leading construction organizations, which see the plan as an attempt to give a little more breathing space to an industry that has been savaged by the economic downturn. Many companies also see the Government’s plans as good news for jobs in construction and engineering, motivating the market out of stagnation and back into active recruitment and gearing up for the mother of all fightbacks.

Recruiters will now be able to breathe a little easier as the Chancellor gives them the room they need to spread their tax obligations (including corporation tax, VAT, national insurance and income tax) across monthly installments rather than making large, one-off payments. This means that companies have more floating capital to invest in recruitment and projects that, a few months ago, looked as if they were at risk of being completely mothballed. The plans also allow recruiters to offset losses against profits from the last three years, rather than only the previous year as before. This means that if 2009 turns into the recession that everyone is predicting, recruitment firms will be able to claim a tax rebate, giving them more capital to invest in filling high level construction jobs.

This all bodes well for those looking for jobs in construction or engineering jobs, as a more stable construction industry is better able to bend and flex to market influences. The overall investment cited by the Government is a huge £20billion. Combined with a cut in the VAT rate to 15% and the £3billion spend on infrastructure, it seems that for the first time in a very long period the Government is looking to invest substantially in UK PLC. The CECA itself has drawn up a ten-point plan to keep the construction industry out of recession and the Chancellor’s PBR certainly seems to have addressed some of the concerns they raise. The CECA hopes that the fast-tracking of infrastructure projects such as Crossrail, Olympics-related developments and various road projects will mean that jobs in construction are secured for the foreseeable future. They also hope that projects already in an advanced stage of design will be brought forward, boosting the job market further.

This flurry of activity has been perfectly timed, according to experts in the industry. Without this investment in the UK’s infrastructure – investment that has long been fought for and is needed – the economic slowdown could have led to hundreds of thousands of jobs being lost throughout construction, engineering and the outlying businesses that service the sector. This doesn’t just have implications for the UK economy, but for global prospects too. The UK seems to be setting a precedent in tackling the effects of a worldwide economic crisis, and for the first time in many years, where the UK leads, the rest of Europe and the USA seems to be following. The readjustment of exchange rates will make imports and exports more viable on an international market, again helping to stabilize company’s order books. This stabilization, despite companies having to tighten their belts in the short term, should bode well for the economy post-2009. With the PBR announcements, the construction industry at last has a fighting chance of weathering the economic storm and securing construction jobs for the future.

Getting your online degree in construction management may be much easier than you think. If you are ready to enhance your career opportunities and are interested in construction management jobs, an online degree in construction management can be achieved on a very flexible schedule that works for you and your time commitments. You can take classes at night and on the weekends and complete tests online when it works for you – all in the comfort of your own home. You can even specialize your online degree in construction management by selecting construction management courses focused on topics like financial management, site planning, contract administration, cost estimating and engineering or architectural sciences.

Construction project management has become an increasingly popular career choice for those graduating from college today. This is partly because the industry has started to recognize how invaluable solid project management for construction sites is – especially considering the growing complexity of major construction projects and the many laws that must be taken into account. The people who are hired into construction management jobs are ultimately responsible for the entire project’s success or failure, which is why the not only requires a specialized degree, but also exceptional interpersonal communication and management skills.

Although these types of jobs can be complicated, they also have a fairly high level of compensation. A traditional or online degree in construction management can help qualify you for positions that pay as much as $63,000 per year, which was the industry average for those jobs in 2002. When you couple that with on-the-job construction management training, your earnings potential can increase dramatically as you move up the company ladder into higher-level positions. To help fast track your career, you could also search out a part-time apprenticeship or internship while you are still working toward your online degree in construction management.

If you are ready to start your search for the best undergraduate program offering an online degree in construction management, you can start by researching what online universities offer variations of the degree. One important piece of criteria is that the school you choose for your online degree in construction management must be an accredited online university. This essentially means the school has been evaluated by an independent committee to determine that the curriculum, staff, facilities and technology are up to current university standards. It also means that you should be able to easily transfer your credits to another university (if need be) and that all companies requiring a traditional or online degree in construction management for new hires will recognize your degree.

If you have ever driven down a road, crossed a bridge, seen or been in a building, you have just experienced the work of a civil engineer. Civil engineering is one of the oldest forms of engineering known to man. The need for qualified engineers has continued to remain strong over the years and it is likely to continue as long as there is a need for public infrastructure. A civil engineering career looks to remain as one of the oldest and continually expanding careers in the engineering arena.

In order to embark upon such a career it is important that a person apply themselves at a college or university in order to earn the appropriate degree. A civil Engineering Career will encompass a wide variety of engineering disciplines. As a result earning an engineering bachelors degree will require you, as a student, to study a vast amount of engineering fields such as structural, construction, environmental, as well as a host of other engineering techniques.

If you are looking to have a career as a civil engineer you need to understand that there will be no one particular career path for you to follow; your career will undoubtedly go down a very diverse and winding road. When starting out it is most likely that you will have to take on an entry-level position. Often times, in the early stages of your career you might serve as a company’s eyes and ears on a specific project, usually on a construction project. As you move along in your career you may have the opportunity to manage, design and do more analysis of more complex and difficult construction projects.

Other paths to be taken during your career can include working on specific projects involving a community’s utility infrastructure. Designing terrain grading, drainage, pavement, water supply, sewer services, electrical services, and the like: all these and many more fall under the purview of a civil engineer.

Embarking upon a Civil Engineering Career means that you are likely to end up in one of many different positions. Your career could lead you to a construction site, a design laboratory, or any one of hundreds of places in need of a civil engineer. If you enjoy variety and flexibility in terms of the jobs you do and do not care about the locations of these jobs then it is a sure bet that a career in this particular engineering discipline might just be what the doctor ordered.

Excellent project management for construction engagements is crucial for any new building or renovation, especially considering the growing complexity of major construction projects and construction-related laws. For these reasons, almost all positions opening up for construction management jobs require not only a specialized degree, but a good deal of experience in the industry.

Although it was not always the case, there are many universities that now offer construction management courses as well as degrees. In fact, there even a number of accredited online universities that offer project management for construction degrees. These degrees, which can be specialized in a number of ways, are a wonderful way to learn all the skills you need to know for jobs in construction management that are difficult to learn during internships or apprenticeships on-site.

Project management for construction engagements can be an all-encompassing job. Oftentimes managers in these roles are ultimately responsible for every aspect of the construction project. This includes managing all employees and contractors, all equipment used and the project budget. That is why is important to choose a project management for construction degree that can teach you a broad skill-set.

Some of the degree coursework that can give you an edge in the job market includes training on the latest software programs and technologies used in the industry and classes on any of the following topics: building codes and standards, contract administration, accounting, financial management, value analysis and project control and management.

It is ideal if you can find a university that will help place its project management for construction students into internships or apprenticeships during the degree program. This will give you the chance to learn a little bit about every aspect of construction and how you can effectively manage the employees and contractors you will need to work with, including architects, civil engineers and day laborers. This type of hands-on experience is exactly what most employers are looking for, and can oftentimes lead to full-time positions once you have graduated with your degree.
